The Green Swan marking is the Nordic countries' common official
environmental marking. It guarantees the consumer that the
product will impose as little strain as possible on the
environment, without influencing the quality of function.
The
Green Swan was introduced by the Nordic Council of Ministers in
1989.
Today more than 1,000 products carry the Green Swan, e.g.
batteries, toilet paper, lawnmowers, clothes and cleaning
agents.
Items with the Green Swan have to comply with stringent
environmental requirements, based on the
"cradle-to-the-grave" principle. This means that
environmental aspects are considered with regard to extraction
of the raw materials, the production process and recycling,
where relevant.
The requirements are revised every three years
to ensure continuous development of environmentally friendly
products.
Nordic Environmental Marking - a foundation in Oslo - is
responsible for the Green Swan.
